Aluminum Truss Maintenance: Tips for Longevity and Safety

Stage Truss 2 - Glory Truss

Why Truss Maintenance Matters

Aluminum truss is a significant investment. With proper care and regular maintenance, quality truss systems from Glory Truss can last 15+ years while maintaining their structural integrity and appearance.

We’ve seen well-maintained truss systems last 15+ years — and poorly maintained ones fail in under 3. These tips come directly from our quality control team and field service experience with clients worldwide.

Pre-Event Inspection Checklist

Before every event, perform these checks:

  1. Visual Inspection: Look for dents, cracks, or deformation in chord tubes and diagonal bracing
  2. Weld Inspection: Check all welded joints for cracks or separation
  3. Connector Check: Inspect spigots and bolts for wear, bending, or corrosion
  4. Pin and Clip Check: Ensure all locking pins and R-clips are present and undamaged
  5. Alignment Test: Verify all sections connect properly without excessive force

Cleaning and Storage

Cleaning Procedure

  • Wipe down with a mild soap solution and soft cloth after each use
  • For stubborn stains, use a non-abrasive aluminum cleaner
  • Avoid harsh chemicals that can corrode the aluminum surface
  • Dry thoroughly before storage to prevent water spots

Proper Storage

  • Store truss horizontally on dedicated racks or dollies
  • Keep in a dry, covered area away from direct sunlight
  • Use protective end caps when not in use
  • Never stack heavy items on top of stored truss sections

Annual Professional Inspection

We recommend a professional structural inspection once per year for truss systems in heavy use. This includes load testing, detailed weld examination, and certification for insurance purposes.

When to Replace

Replace truss sections immediately if you find:

  • Any visible cracks in welds or tubing
  • Significant deformation (>3mm deviation)
  • Corrosion that has penetrated the surface
  • Connectors that no longer fit securely

Safety Note: Never use damaged truss. The cost of replacement is always less than the cost of an accident.
